With volumes approaching 30,000 visits per year, the St. Mary's Emergency Department has doubled it patient visits in 5 years. The recently renovated and expanded department consists of 17 beds, 13 of which are located in the Main ED and 4 in the FastTrack. The Main ED is staffed 24 hours a day by one Emergency Physician and from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. by one mid-level provider.
The Main ED sees approximately 70% of all emergency patients and its 20 rooms are generally reserved for those patients with acute and complex medical and psychiatric conditions.
The FastTrack sees the remaining 30% of the ED total volume. This unit evaluates patient with less acute and less complex conditions, usually complaints that can be managed in less than one hour. FastTrack hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, including holidays. The FastTrack is staffed by a certified mid-level provider, either a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician's Assistant.
Emergency Department patients are seen first by a triage nurse who determines based on acuity and illness complexity, to which area the patient will be sent. When a bed is available the patient is taken to the room from triage and the registration process is completed there.
The St. Mary's Emergency Department is ranked one of the top emergency departments in the community and the nation. We have top patient satisfaction scores, being ranked in the 99% in New York State and in the 98% nationally. Our mission is to provide timely, appropriate, quality emergency care for patients and their families.
