Imaging Services

St. Mary’s offers a full range of digital medical imaging services that can be shared with offsite physicians and members of your care team. These services include:

• Mammography
  • St. Mary’s offers digital screening and diagnostic mammograms, which are low-dose X-rays that can detect irregularities in the breast that neither you nor your doctor can feel.

• CT scan
  • CT is an advanced X-ray that produces highly accurate images of the structures in the body and how they relate to one another. Your referring physician will provide guidelines for you before your procedure to help you prepare.

• Dexa scan
  • Bone densitometry uses DXA (“dexa”) technology to safely and accurately measure the bone mineral density in the hip and spine.

• MRI scan
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) produces high-quality images of the inside of the human body.Because the MRI scanner uses powerful magnets, you must inform us about any metal in your body (artifical joints, metal valves, shrapnel, etc.) when you schedule your appointment to determine if an MRI is safe for you. You cannot have an MRI if you have:
    • A pacemaker
    • Aneurysm clips
    • Cochlear (ear) implants
    • Cardioverter defibrillators

    Most MRI sessions take 20 to 40 minutes to complete. We will provide earplugs or earphones to mask some of the noise from the scanner. If you are claustrophobic, your physician may order a mild sedative to help you relax during the scan; someone must drive you home, if so.

• Nuclear medicine
  • Nuclear medicine uses a combination of computers, detectors and radioactive substances to obtain images of the body. It is often used to detect suspected tumors, blood flow and organ function using:
    • Bone scans
    • Cardiolite scans
    • MUGA scans
    • Thyroid scans
    • Biliary scans
    • Liver/spleen scans
    • Renal scans
    • Lung scans

• PET/CT
  • A PET/CT scan combines Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) images to show the function of cells in the body, along with anatomy such as vessels, lymph nodes, and organs. It helps doctors diagnose, monitor, and determine treatment for cancer.

• Ultrasound
  • Ultrasound uses sound waves to image different areas of the body. It is most commonly used to diagnose conditions in the abdomen, pelvis, and blood vessels, and to view a fetus during pregnancy.
